How innovation unlocks economic, environmental and animal welfare solutions in poultry farming
This event was by invitation only.
A growing global population, increases in per capita income and changes in diets are driving global protein demand, including animal protein. At the same time consumers are more than ever concerned about the environmental impact of their protein consumption and are increasingly passionate about the humane treatment of animals.
These developments challenge the European poultry sector to find the optimal balance between economic performance, animal welfare, health, and environmental outcomes. To meet this challenge, the sector has been on a successful journey of continuous improvement across all these areas and continues to invest in innovations at various intervention levels.
The Solutions Workshop, hosted by Cargill in the framework of the 2023 Forum for the Future of Agriculture, provided useful information for the discussions later this year on the publication of the European Commission’s proposals on animal welfare and on the legislative framework on Sustainable Food Systems.
Namely, this Workshop aimed to facilitate a multi-stakeholder discussion around the role that innovation plays to contribute towards the economic, environmental and animal welfare goals in poultry farming.
The discussion focused on how through the adoption of a holistic and science-based approach and by balancing animal welfare, social, environmental, and economic objectives, co-benefits in the poultry sector can be generated. The collaborative workshop brought together relevant stakeholders to share their views on how this can be achieved.
