Building a sustainable EU Food system framework: share responsibility equally

The Farm to Fork Strategy will help shape farms in Europe in such a way that they respond to the consumers and environmental expectations, while still the farming business. Is the current Farm to Fork strategy proposal going to succeed to bridge the gap between consumers and farmers? Will the intermediate actors of the supply chain also be bound by commitments, or will voluntary action remain paramount?

Maria do Céu Antunes was born in 1970 in Abrantes. She holds a degree in Biochemistry from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra and a postgraduate degree in Quality Management and Food Safety from the Egas Moniz School of Health Sciences. She was Secretary of State for Regional Development from February to October 2019. She was Mayor of Abrantes for 9 years and since 2013 has chaired the Council of the Médio Tejo Intermunicipal Community. She was a member of the Economic and Social Council, and of the Council of European Communities and Regions at the Standing Committee for Equality of Women and Men in Local Life. She was a member of the Monitoring Committee of the Regional Operational Programme of the Centro Region - Centro 2020, and of the Executive Committee of the Regional Tourism Authority of the Centro de Portugal Region, while also chairing the board of TecParques - Portuguese Association of Science and Technology Parks. She has received the following awards: Most Family-Friendly Local Authority, Equal Lives Municipal Award, The Tesla Sustainable Leadership Award - Leadership category, Women of the Decade in Public Life Award - All Ladies League.

Claire Bury is currently Deputy Director-General in DG Health and Food Safety with responsibility for food safety and sustainability. She is also a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe in Bruges. She was previously Deputy Director-General for the Digital Single Market in DG Communications Networks, Content and Technology and Director of Modernisation of the Single Market in Directorate General Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs. Before that, she was Head of Unit for Company Law, Corporate Governance and Financial Crime in Directorate General Internal Market and Services, and Deputy Head of Cabinet to Internal Market Commissioners Charlie McCreevy and Frits Bolkestein. An English barrister by training, she worked in the Commission's Legal Service and, before coming to Brussels, in the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office. Dr. Jeroen Candel works as assistant professor in food and agricultural policy at Wageningen University, the Netherlands. In his research, he studies how governments, from local to EU level, can support a transition towards a more sustainable food system. In his most recent publications, he has reflected on the ground-breaking potential of the EU’s Farm to Fork Strategy and provided recommendations for improvements of the Common Agricultural Policy. Moreover, he was one of the authors of the SAPEA-report ‘A Sustainable Food System for the European Union’. Apart from his academic duties, Dr. Candel closely engages with policymakers and stakeholders to provide suggestions for improved food governance. He is a member of the Dutch Council on Animal Affairs and the supervisory board of the foundation Transitiecoalitie Voedsel (‘the Food transition Coalition’). Together with researchers from Oxford University and the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences he has set up the new platform Table, which seeks to facilitate informed discussions about how the food system can become sustainable, resilient, just, and ultimately “good”. She holds a Master’s degree in food science from the Polytech University of Montpellier. Samuel is a winegrower from Southern France. He works with his brother on what was once their grandparents’ farm and has 20 hectares of organic vines in “PDO Languedoc” and “PGI Pays d’Oc”. Samuel studied viticulture and oenology and did internships in the USA on vineyard management. He got involved in Jeunes Agriculteurs (JA), the French young farmers’ organisation, as Secretary General and then President of JA Hérault, and Treasurer of JA Languedoc Roussillon. In 2018, he joined the national Board of JA in charge of European and international issues, the food chain and quality labels. In 2019, he was elected Vice-President of CEJA and is since January 2021 the current President of the organisation. Dr Janez Potočnik graduated from the Faculty of Economics at the University of Ljubljana, Slovenia. After a successful career starting in 1989 in Slovenia as a researcher at the Institute of Economic Research, Director of the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development (1994), he was appointed Head of the Negotiating Team for the Accession of Slovenia to the EU (1998). He was also Director of Government Office for European Affairs (2000), Minister Councillor at the Office of the Prime Minister (2001) and Minister responsible for European Affairs (2002). In 2004 he joined the European Commission, first as "shadow Commissioner for Enlargement and then as Commissioner responsible for Science and Research. In 2010 Dr Potočnik became Commissioner for Environment. His term ended in November 2014 and he was appointed as a Co-Chair of UN Environment International Resource Panel and was also appointed as a Chairman of The Forum for the Future of Agriculture and RISE Foundation and a Member of the European Policy Centre's Advisory Council. After leaving Syngenta in 2017, Mark became Chief Executive of EngineeringUK, a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to inspiring and nurturing STEM skills in young people. Mark later became Head of Marketing and Public Affairs for Indigo Agriculture Europe GmbH. Mark is a co-founder and senior adviser to the Forum for the Future of Agriculture and a Senior Fellow at the Transatlantic Policy Network.
